What to look for at the front of a house

Five minutes on the pavement tells you a lot, whether it's your own house or one you're thinking of buying. Start at the roof and work down to the ground.

See the answers
  1. A plant growing in the gutter. Leaves and moss block a gutter, so rain spills over the edge and soaks the wall below. A gutter cleaner. Gutters are work at height, so it's one to hand over.
  2. A slipped slate. The gap lets rain reach the roof timbers. A small gap now can mean a stain on a ceiling later. A roofer.
  3. A cracked chimney pot. Pieces can come down in a storm. Water gets into the stack through the crack too. A roofer, who can look over the rest of the stack while they're up there.
  4. A downpipe that stops short. Rain pours down the wall instead of into the drain. See the green stain it has left? A gutter fitter can add the missing length so the water reaches the drain.
  5. A flaking window sill. Once the paint goes, water gets into the wood and it starts to rot. A decorator, or a joiner if the wood feels soft.
  6. Soil heaped above the damp-proof course. The damp-proof course is a barrier low in the wall. Soil piled above it lets damp climb straight past. You can sort this one: dig the bed back so the soil sits at least two bricks below that line.
  7. An air brick hidden behind a pot. Air bricks let air under the floor to keep the timbers dry. Blocked, the timbers can rot. You can sort this one: move the pot.
  8. Missing pointing. Rain gets into the gaps between the bricks, so the wall stays damp. A builder who does repointing. On an older house, ask about lime mortar.

Only looks wrong: little slots above the window. They're weep vents. They let water that gets into the wall drain back out, so they're meant to be there.
